A Zentangle Inspired Project Exploring Form, Structure & Flow
Sphere Spirals, draws inspiration from a remarkable woodcut created in 1958 by the legendary artist M. C. Escher.
The artwork is part of the collection at the National Gallery of Art, and belongs to a series of prints that reveal Escher’s fascination with complex constructions.
Escher loved challenging the viewer’s perception.
He explored ways to represent three-dimensional structures on a flat surface, allowing the eye to understand how the form is built. Often he would “open up” his constructions, offering glimpses of areas that would normally remain hidden.
In Sphere Spirals, he created a sphere wrapped with a network of circles flowing longitudinally and latitudinally. Unlike many of his famous illusion works, this piece is not an impossible form—instead it celebrates structure, geometry, and elegant design.
And this fascinating concept becomes the inspiration for our Zentangle Inspired exploration.
Let’s translate Escher’s fascination with form into a beautiful Zentangle Inspired artwork.
One line.
One spiral.
One mindful stroke at a time.
Your Sphere Spirals awaits.
✨ A Beautiful Conceptual Inspiration
Explore an idea inspired by one of the most intriguing graphic artists.
✨ A Unique String Structure
The spherical network becomes the foundation for our Zentangle composition.
✨ Creative Use of Border Tangles
Learn how border tangles can beautifully interact with structured strings.
✨ A Perfect Blend of Logic & Creativity
Structured enough to stimulate the mind, yet meditative enough to relax into the process.
✨ A Dimensional Final Artwork
Through shading and tangling, your tile will begin to feel beautifully layered and alive.
In this project we translate the Sphere Spirals concept into a Zentangle string and build a composition around it using carefully chosen border tangles.
The artwork slowly evolves as you:
• establish the spherical structure
• add flowing tangles along the borders
• introduce watercolour accents
• enhance the form with thoughtful shading
The result is a piece that feels balanced, dimensional, and visually engaging.
Inside this lesson you will explore:
• The Sphere Spirals concept and its artistic inspiration
• Translating geometric ideas into Zentangle strings
• Using border tangles creatively within a structure
• Adding soft watercolour accents to enhance the design
• Applying shading techniques to create depth and form
✔ Zentangle lovers who enjoy structured tangling
✔ Artists curious about geometry-inspired compositions
✔ Students wanting to expand their string and shading techniques
✔ Anyone who enjoys mindful art with a conceptual twist
The project is organised into clear sections so you can move through it with ease:
• Reference images
• Downloadable worksheets
• Visual guidance for the project
• Understanding the concept
• Preparing your base structure
• Adding the first layer of colour
• Step-by-step tangling
• Building rhythm and movement across the sphere
• Creating dimension and depth
• Bringing the composition together beautifully

Namaste,
I’m Sandhya Manne… and I absolutely love to tangle!
As India’s first Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT #7) and a full-time artist, I’ve been joyfully immersed in this meditative art form for over a decade.
From cozy studios by the Bay of Bengal to buzzing online classrooms across the world, I’ve had the privilege of teaching thousands of enthusiastic students the magic of Zentangle. My journey has taken me into boardrooms too—sharing mindful creativity with teams at Texas Instruments, Wipro, Danfoss, Target, Marico, Kotak Mahindra, Asian Paints, and many more.
Teaching isn’t just something I do—it’s what lights me up. I’m obsessed with helping people discover their own creative rhythm, one stroke at a time. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a returning tangler ready to grow your skills, you’re exactly where you need to be.
So… are you excited? 😆 Because I can’t wait to welcome you in and guide you through this beautiful, relaxing, skill-building, creative Zen time that Zentangle brings into your life.
Let’s tangle together! ✨
